Godspell
Music Composed by Stephen Schwartz with the Book by John-Michael Tebelak
Learning and knowledge are useless in a world in which people are not willing to self-reflect and seek common ground. - Director, Marc Williams
Our goal was to build community among the cast, crew, and audience by breaking down the audience/performer division and getting the audience involved. The audience played charades and Pictionary, acted, blew bubbles, threw confetti, graffitied the stage, changed the columns from grey to a rainbow, played with beach balls, and drank grape juice. The audience was not only in the house but on the stage. The performers have integrated into the audience areas also.
The environment is not a recreation of a specific location, but instead is a space created for Jesus to teach and bring together a group of disparate individuals. It is an urban-influenced environment that becomes more colorful as the show proceeds.
While the play could be set in a real time and place, it is impossible to pin down precisely when or where Godspell must occur. The play is not realistic. It is the play’s presentation of the failures of educational dogma that form its world. In this regard, Godspell takes place in a broken American school in April 2019. - Director, Marc Williams
Production Photos
All photos were taken during the final dress rehearsal.
Ground Plan and Rendering
All renderings for this production were done digitally. First, the scenery was drafted three-dimensionally in Vectorworks. Then a .jpg was exported into Adobe Sketch for the iPad. From there it was colored and rendered. Finally, it was exported to Adobe Photoshop and finishing touches were added.
